The BlackBerry PlayBook 7" tablet is here, and a spate of pre-release reviews were less than stellar. RIM may be late to the game, but they've got a fresh new OS powered by QNX and a divine user interface that we'd applaud even more vocally were it not such a blatant rip off of Palm/HP webOS. The PlayBook is available in WiFi-only models (3G/4G versions are coming in May or June, with Sprint being first), and the 16 gig WiFi version we have for review sells for $499. A 32 gig model will set you back $599 and a 64 gig model is $699, similar to iPad 2 pricing.

The tablet has a quality feel to it with a soft touch finish and understated design that reminds us of the Motorola Xoom (that's not a bad thing). It doesn't have the plastic look and feel of the 7" B, and at 14.9 ounces it has some heft. The PlayBook runs on a 1GHz dual core CPU that's quickly become the standard for tablets in various operating systems, and it has a healthy gig of RAM. It has a rear 5 megapixel camera and a 3 megapixel front camera, though there's not much you can do with the front camera beyond taking photos of yourself. Both cameras can shoot sharp and colorful 1080p video at 30fps and they're the best we've seen on tablets.

The PlayBook makes a very good first impression. The hardware has that quality look, and the 1024 x 600 capacitive display is very bright, sharp and colorful. It's large enough to read a web page without much zooming, yet small enough to fit in a large jacket pocket or purse. The home screen and user interface are easy to understand and delightful to use. It plays video like a champ, even 1080p.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is undeniably one of the hottest phones of 2011. After all, like the once-a-year iPhone, there's only one official Google pure Android experience phone each year. While last year's Nexus S, also made by Samsung, was a disappointment when it came to groundbreaking specs, it was an absolute pleasure to use thanks to the pure experience and frequent early OS updates. The Galaxy Nexus, like the original Nexus by HTC, is back to seriously high end hardware.

The phone runs on a 1.2GHz TI dual core CPU with a gig of RAM, and it's the first phone to run Android OS 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It has a gorgeous 720p Super AMOLED display, 16 gigs ofinternal storage and the fastest camera we've seen on a smartphone. Alas, like the Nexus S, there's no expansion card slot. It has a curved contour display and Samsung's unmistakable design esthetic taken from the Galaxy S II line. But the Galaxy Nexus has more complex and interesting curves that lend class to this otherwise unabashedly plastic phone.

Windows tablets get a bad rap among consumer product reviewers because they're more expensive than mobile OS tablets, they weigh more and tend to have shorter battery life. Vertical market users and artists see the beauty of Windows tablets, and the ways they can make digital art come to life or simplify work in the field. With the Samsung Series 7 Slate, those who appreciate Windows tablets no longer have to suffer poor battery life or heft. The Series 7 Tablet weighs just 2 pounds, which is remarkable considering that many Android 10" tablets weigh 1.65 pounds and the Asus Eee Pad Slider weighs 2.1 pounds. The venerable Asus Eee Slate EP121, one of the best Windows 7 tablets on the market, weighs 2.5 pounds and runs for 2.5 to 3 hours on a charge.

Since this is a full Windows machine, anything you do with Windows 7, you can do with the Slate. Need a keyboard to do some serious typing? Plug in a USB keyboard or pair a Bluetooth wireless keyboard. Want to dock it to a large monitor? Use HDMI to do that. Need more storage? Plug in a USB external hard drive. That makes it more powerful and versatile than mobile OS tablets, but the drawback is you'll have to deal with Windows Updates and virus threats.

Is the Samsung Series 7 Slate wildly better than the Asus Eee Slate? Not in my book, but it brings some important advancements like a second generation ULV Intel Core i5 CPU with Intel HD3000 graphics, much better battery life and a better capacitive touch experience. The Eee Slate's multi-touch works OK with touch, but it takes some tweaking of Windows settings to make things better (enlarging fonts, for example, to make for larger touch targets). Out of the box, we're really impressed with the Samsung, despite its smaller 11.6" display. It's easier to touch even small Windows Start menu items, and Samsung's Android-like launcher is perfect thanks to its big icons. The iPad and Android tablets are still easier to use with touch, but this is as good as it gets for Windows 7, and it's not bad at all.

Horsepower and Performance

The tablet has plenty of horsepower thanks to the second generation 1.6GHz Intel Core i5-2467M CPU. It handles Adobe Photoshop and other CS5 apps handily, and it's more than up to the task of working with Corel Painter, Art Rage, MS Office apps, web browsing with full Flash (remember this is Windows 7, no need to worry about mobile Flash) and email. You'll notice a speed improvement coming from the Asus Eee Slate with its first gen Core i5 ULV CPU, and modest 3D gaming is possible on the Series 7 Slate. There's no dedicated graphics option for the Samsung Slate, but machines this thin and light rarely support such options (cost, battery life and heat become an issue).

The tablet comes with 4 gigs of DDR3 RAM that's soldered on the motherboard and is not upgradable. It's available with either a 64 or 128 gig mSATA SSD and there's no optical drive included. USB CD, DVD and Blu-ray drives work fine.

After the Samsung Galaxy S II and the Galaxy R, which we already reviewed, it's time to have a look one step down the ladder – to the midrange Samsung GALAXY W.

Its place there is secured by the 1.4GHz single-core processor, 3.7-inch 480x800 pixels LCD display and the 14.4Mbps HSDPA radio. Also, the 5MP rear camera is accompanied by an LED flash, and we have a front-facing one for video chat – two features which are absent from the lower-end Galaxy M Pro, for example.

On paper, the phone has it all to be a decent Android handset and the design, while nothing remarkable, has some interesting curves to flaunt. Does it hit the sweet value for money spot that its category is meant to conquer? Read on our review to find out...

Design:

The Samsung GALAXY W looks like a pouch with its flat upper side and curved bottom, especially when you turn it over on its front. The upper part where the camera with the LED flash are, is made of hard glossy plastic. It is not soft-touch plastic, just dotted for easier grip, which makes the Galaxy W very easy to hold and operate. It is not that thin at 0.45” (11.5mm), but is very light at 3.93” (112g).

The handset is almost the perfect size for one-handed use, since it doesn't boast a huge display, but a 3.7” LCD one with 480x800 pixels, making for a good 252ppi pixel density. Introduction:

The Cseries portfolio represents the core line of Nokia phones. Devices in it can come in a variety of form factors, and range in numbering from 1 to 9, depending on the price and features. The highest-end handset in the series so far is the Nokia C6, which brings a touchscreen to the line, plus a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

It is intriguing to review the Nokia C6-00 as a new alternative to the not so successful flagship N97, and the first touchscreen phone from Nokia – the 5800 Xpress Music. The C6 seems to be heading for right smack in the middle of those two, as any self-respecting Cseries device should. It takes a little bit of both by stealing the run-of-the-mill screen, innards and appearances of the 5800, but upgrading the camera to 5MP; then adding the slide-out keyboard of the N97, but omitting the Carl-Zeiss lens and the generous built-in memory to keep the price in check. Is it combining the right ingredients to become a viable Cseries mid-range offering with the somewhat tired Symbian, considering the proliferation of modern touch-based mobile OS's? Marketing Pack List Reveals Galaxy Nexus Variant for Sprint

A screenshot of a packing list has been leaked , showing that Sprint is preparing to market their variant of the Galaxy Nexus within the next two months.
The phone was announced on Monday night with multiple variants confirmed for select carriers, including NTT DoCoMo, AT&T and Verizon Wireless, but the previously leaked specification list pulled from the NTT DoCoMo catalog before the event did not list a Sprint variant at the time, suggesting that the device has only recently been approved for sale. This is corroborated by internal inventory sistem changes in the last two days confirming that the phone is listed for future sale on Sprint, but no further details have been confirmed.
The Galaxy Nexus will be launched next month on Verizon Wireless as a timed exclusive with LTE support, but it is not known whether the Sprint version will include WiMax support, despite previous statements made by Sprint executives to continue releasing and supporting WiMax throughout 2012 in preparation for its transition to LTE late next year.

Following up on our previous reporting regarding the capability to freely activate Verizon iPhones on Page Plus after the relaxation of Verizon’s MVNO device activation rules, Page Plus has admitted that the initial confirmation first reported by PhoneNews.com after PagePlus approved the initial report for publication was in error and has fully admitted that the initial report was based on a miscommunication that reached multiple levels of the executive team before being caught and corrected.
The Kitty Wireless forum where the initial report originated and which we subsequently confirmed initially with Page Plus has issued the following statements on the matter, which also corroborate the situation:

As for the iPhone issue itself, please understand that there was a miscommunication at the top levels of Page Plus on this matter, which resulted in certain information being approved for release, and then that approval being retracted after it was already published. The iPhone is not allowed at this time. We have been told to say this: Should an iPhone be activated on the network, it could be subject to deactivation at any point in time in the future if the “powers that be” determine to do that.

While the miscommunication is regrettable, it does not automatically mean that iPhone activation on Page Plus is prohibited, only that the possibility exists that service could be terminated at any time after initial activation, providing cold comfort for those looking to activate on Page Plus.

It appears there is a definite name for an upcoming version of the iPhone. The moniker “iPhone 4S” was founding the info.plist file of the MobileDevices bundle that was included with the new beta release of iTunes. In this file, two descriptions of a black and white iPhone 4S can be found that look identical to the current version of the iPhone.

This find puts increases the likelihood of Apple introducing new iPhones this week. The new iPhone is believed to include an eight megapixel camera, 515MB of Ram, and the A5 processor. However, the find seems to indicate the new iPhones will keep the same design of the iPhone 4, or at least this model will.
The new iPhones are expected to be duel-mode, in that they can either run on CDMA or GSM networks. As of right now, Apple markets a unique iPhone model for each network.
As for the design, insider Ming-Chi-Kuo has stated that there is no evidence that the new iPhones will be redesigned. However, he did state that Apple has been developing a model that has an improved antenna design. The same glass will be used for the new iPhones as well.
Currently, it is expected that Foxconn will manufacture 85% of Apple’s fifth generation iPhone units with the other 15% manufactured by Pegatron.
Both models will use Apple’s new operation system, iOS5. It is expected that iOS5 will contain some type of voice recognition, which will allow iPhone users to accomplish a number of things such as text messaging, scheduling appointments, or looking up information.
Rumors have Apple manufacturing roughly 30 million units by the end of this year. If Apple can meet that goal, it is very possible that they beat the record of 20.34 million iPhones that were sold in the June 2011 quarter.

Within 24 hours of opening pre-orders for the new iPhone 4S, Apple has pushed back the expected shipping times for the deliver of the iPhones an estimated one or two weeks. Apple began to take pre-orders online through the Apple website at approximately 12:01AM PST on Friday.

Some users did have trouble ordering though. Verizon and Sprint customers were able to preorder on time but many AT&T customers found that they were unable to purchase an iPhone 4S for a few hours. When you take a look at Voipbuster website, you may get the feeling that you have seen it somewhere before, just the color is different. Well, you are absolutely right, it has the same website structure with VoIPstunt, and what’s more important, they offer nearly the same VoIP software and service. One new piece of mobile VoIP software that recent caught my eye was RingFree. RingFree is a mobile VoIP application for the Apple iPhone that leverages a users existing VoIP service provider and the WiFi capabilities of the phone to send and receive VoIP calls.

About RingFree

Based out of San Francisco, the companies first product, which is called the RF Dialer, is the first and only iPhone application that allows SIP URI calls, calls to Voice over IM Services (such as Google Talk, MSN Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger), and other IP-based voice services. RingFree essentially works like a call through service. The first leg of your call goes to a local area number (RingFree server), where the call is then sent via RingFree via the internet to the end recipient.
For the purposes of this review, I used the RingFree RF Dialer in conjunction with JunctionNetworks, my current service provider of choice.

RingFree Pros

What first struck me about the application was how slick it looked. I am big on “style” when it comes to the applications I use. Not only is the application slick, but it is very easy to use an navigate. Set-up on the RF Dialer was painless and because it does not require an downloading or installation, simply go to http://rf.com on the iPhone’s web browser, sign-in (or sign-up) to your account and you are ready to start calling.
For first time users, all you need in order to set-up the RF Dialer with your SIP service account is your SIP service username, password and proxy url. It is really that easy.
I placed a half dozen calls to a number of different locations. Each calls was about three minutes in length, and I used both my AT&T data connection and my home wifi connection to connect to the internet. In all instances, the calls were remarkably crisp. I was amazed that there was no packet loss or jitter, given the number of “transformations” the call most take in order for it to terminate at it’s end recipient.

RingFree Cons

The only drawbacks to the RingFree RF Dialer would come if I wasn’t familiar with the way the service works. For the average Joe, configuring the RF Dialer, might be a problem and when placing a call, a pop-up appears on the iPhone that states “Call…” followed by the local area number (not the number you actually dialed). This could prove confusing to a less savvy consumer. I also could not get RingFree to pass my caller id, so all of my recipients with caller id saw “unknown.”
In all honesty, these are very minor negatives and shouldn’t be a deterrent to a user trying the service.

RingFree Conclusion

This is an excellent piece of software, that I highly recommend those interested in mobile VoIP take a look at. It is is easy to set-up, use and works with just about every SIP service under the sun…and you don’t have to jailbreak your iPhone to get it to work.

Other terms frequently encountered and often used synonymously with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), broadband telephony, and broadband phone.

Internet telephony refers to communications services—Voice, fax, SMS, and/or voice-messaging applications—that are transported via the Internet, rather than the public switched telephone network (PSTN). The steps involved in originating a VoIP telephone call are signaling and media channel setup, digitization of the analog voice signal, encoding, packetization, and transmission as Internet Protocol (IP) packets over a packet-switched network. On the receiving side, similar steps (usually in the reverse order) such as reception of the IP packets, decoding of the packets and digital-to-analog conversion reproduce the original voice stream.[1] Even though IP Telephony and VoIP are terms that are used interchangeably, they are actually different; IP telephony has to do with digital telephony systems that use IP protocols for voice communication while VoIP is actually a subset of IP Telephony. VoIP is a technology used by IP telephony as a means of transporting phone calls.[2]

VoIP systems employ session control protocols to control the set-up and tear-down of calls as well as audio codecs which encode speech allowing transmission over an IP network as digital audio via an audio stream. The codec used is varied between different implementations of VoIP (and often a range of codecs are used); some implementations rely on narrowband and compressed speech, while others support high fidelity stereo codecs.

There are three types of VoIP tools that are commonly used; IP Phones, Software VoIP and Mobile and Integrated VoIP. The IP Phones are the most institutionally established but still the least obvious of the VoIP tools. The use of software VoIP has increased during the global recession of 2008-2010, as many persons, looking for ways to cut costs have turned to these tools for free or inexpensive calling or video conferencing applications.[citation needed] Software VoIP can be further broken down into three classes or subcategories; Web Calling, Voice and Video Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing. Mobile and Integrated VoIP is just another example of the adaptability of VoIP. VoIP is available on many smartphones and internet devices so even the users of portable devices that are not phones can still make calls or send SMS text messages over 3G or WIFI.

Skype is now being worked on as an application for the iPad2 and iPad. The news will make remote communication even easier and is a huge boost for the world of mobile VoIP.

Skype is already available on most smartphones so that if you have used up your contract minutes allowance, but still have some internet credit you can make free calls. It is, of course, especially useful for calling people who live abroad at an affordable rate.

The news was confirmed by Skype Vice President Rick Osterloh. The new app will have everything you normally expect from Skype, including video chat, except for the file sharing feature – because of a conflict with the Apple system.

So it seems that Microsoft is not going to hog Skype for itself. It is also a nice move from Apple because in theory Skype is a direct competitor to their new Facetime video chat product.

An interesting article here describes the problems that large companies face as they try to diversify – specifically the move of Microsoft from software towards IP telephony.

While both areas are highly regulated, moving into the world of Voice over Internet Protocol through their highly publicized purchase of Skype certainly presents new challenges.

Hence the slew of articles about Microsoft enabling the ability to eavesdrop on VoIP conversations. While this was initially interpreted by some as a sort of Orwellian invasion of privacy, in fact this is a legal requirement.

Law enforcement needs to be able to have access to VoIP call transcripts for the purposes of terrorism prevention. VoIP solutions have many good aspects but they can also be used for nefarious purposes as it is much harder to track the original of a VoIP call. This is in danger of making the infamous wiretapping way of police work (as depicted in the excellent drama series The Wire) obsolete.
